Explore the old part of the centre of Cape Town where leading commercial galleries meet 18th and 19th century private houses and museums.
Your Art Trails experience will start at the Cape Town Company Gardens visiting the oldest art museum in the country - the South African National Gallery. Here you and your Art Trails guide will view current exhibitions intermingled with 17th to 19th century European and South African paintings. Walking through the historical Cape Town Company Gardens we stop at the house museum of Marie Koopmans de Wet where we learn the story of this remarkable 19th century woman, who lived in the colony in Cape Town while in transition from the Dutch to the English during the Anglo-Boer war.
Next onto to Greenmarket Square, a historical square in the centre of Cape Town, resplendent with architectural gems surrounding the stalls of informal traders. Past Greenmarket Square into Church Street where the oldest fine arts association in the country, the Association of Visual Arts (AVA), is based. Housed in an original 17th century house, the AVA is a platform for emerging artists hosting exhibitions for the new William Kentridge’s of the art world.
Across the pedestrian way, we find contemporary commercial art galleries Smith and WorldArt. Further up the road we delve into Michael Chandler’s treasure trove of colonial Cape Town ceramics and decorative arts updated with a contemporary twist.
Further into the Cape Town City Centre, we visit 99 on Loop, Ebony, Youngblood Art Development centre, Artist Proof Studio and Gallery MOMO. Shopping can be done at several decorative arts stores along the way, such as Tribal Trends and AVOOVA.
The half or full day tour allows for custom made stops, coffee and lunches or combined with some of the other city routes.
